A mountaineer with a significant following on TikTok and Instagram, Luke “Booka” Rollnik has embarked on a journey far beyond the slopes and peaks of the world's mountains. A Tribute to a Friend

The genesis of Ballzy Expeditions is deeply personal. Booka recounts how the loss of a close friend, Ben Butler, who was afflicted with testicular cancer, inspired him to pursue his bucket-list dream of visiting Everest Base Camp. Ben was a humorous man who’d handled his cancer with the same comedic wit he’d always possessed.

“When he got his first cancer,” Booka recalls, “which was testicular cancer, he ended up having one of his testicles cut off, and he was a real character. He had a really great sense of humor. When I called him to see if he was okay a couple of days later, his answering machine said, ‘Hey, you've called Ben. I hope you're having a ball of the time this weekend. I'm just hanging around like an empty sack.’ And he just rattled off about five jokes about, you know, balls and empty sacks and things like that.”

Ben would later die of lung cancer at the age of 42.

"I booked my trip the next day after he died," Booka recalls. This profound loss propelled him into the world of mountaineering, a realm where he realized the need for serious skill and preparation.

From Novice to Expert

Booka's journey in mountaineering began with little experience. His first significant climb was Island Peak in Nepal, followed by a course in New Zealand. He gradually scaled higher, tackling Ama Dablam and the eighth-highest mountain in the world, Mount Manaslu. Each ascent was a step towards his ultimate goal: Mount Everest. He initially planned to summit Everest in 2020, but the travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic made this an impossibility at the time.

Honoring Ben’s Memory Through Charity

While preparing for Manaslu, Booka envisioned honoring his friend's memory in a unique way. He initiated Ballzy Expeditions, raising funds for the Queensland Cancer Council and donating sports equipment to Nepalese children. This act of kindness, combining his passion for mountaineering with his interest in charity, became a cornerstone of his expeditions.

The Everest Ascent and Expanding Charity

In 2022, Booka's dream to summit Everest materialized. This time, his fundraising efforts were directed toward education and sports equipment for Sherpa children, a tribute to the community that plays a crucial role in every mountaineer's journey in Nepal. "Still donated balls, because obviously, it's in Ben’s memory," he says, ensuring that his friend's humorous spirit continues to resonate.

Booka's vision extended beyond personal accomplishments. He began organizing trips to Everest Base Camp, inviting others to experience the joy of giving while also fulfilling their own dreams. "I'm really helping people’s dreams come true," he says, emphasizing his dual goal of adventure and philanthropy.
