Overwatch x Rescue's Unwavering Commitment to High-Altitude Rescues

Mountain Snow High altitudes come with their own set of challenges, both for adventurers and the people who are tasked with rescuing them. The thin air, extreme weather conditions, and tricky terrain are just a few of the factors that can turn an adventure into a life-threatening situation. For many rescue service providers, the challenges associated with high-altitude rescues have led to restrictions on the altitudes at which they operate. But for those in distress, such restrictions could mean the difference between life and death.

The Limitations of Other Rescue Service Providers

Many rescue service providers will not rescue people above a certain altitude (such as 3,000 or 4,000 meters). Those that do, will charge an added fee or require a more expensive plan for being rescued above that altitude.

However, these altitudes are more commonly encountered among outdoor travelers than many people may realize, even for more common and less extreme forms of outdoor adventuring. For instance, a number of popular parks and trails in the United States are above the 3,000-meter limit (or 10,000 feet, which is slightly higher than 3,000 meters). These include Cedar Breaks National Monument in Utah, the Maroon Bells in Colorado, and several of the most popular trails at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. These aren’t all considered super-difficult trails, and many are hiked on by hordes of tourists each year, including more casual adventurers. In some cases, even popular vantage points that don’t require a hike at all are technically above the 3,000-meter or 10,000-foot line.

There are even populated towns in the United States above this altitude, including Leadville, Colorado (population: 2,600), and Alma, Colorado (population: 323). In certain other countries, populated places at high altitudes are even more common. In Peru, the city of Cusco, with over 400,000 inhabitants, is one of the most popular destinations in the country for tourists, and it stands at an elevation of 3,399 meters (11,152 feet). In Bolivia, the two largest cities, La Paz and El Alto, stand at 3,640 meters (11,942 feet) and 4,150 meters (13,615 feet), respectively.

Mountain How Overwatch x Rescue Goes the Extra Distance

Overwatch x Rescue, on the other hand, has no altitude restrictions in its emergency assistance and rescue capabilities. For example, the Crisis Response Center was alerted by a device distress signal from a 27-year-old woman situated in the mountains near Snowmass Lake, Colorado (elevation of 3,347 meters or 10,980 feet). After a treacherous fall of 400 feet down a slope blanketed with scree and snow, she sustained injuries to her head and leg. Reacting swiftly, the operations team liaised with the Pitkin County emergency dispatch, who then informed Mountain Rescue Aspen. Search and rescue teams were then promptly dispatched both on foot and via CareFlight helicopter to the Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness area. There, they located the injured woman and the bystanders who were with her. In a span of just 4 hours, she was airlifted and admitted to Aspen Valley Hospital, where she underwent treatment for non-critical injuries to her right leg and head. By the following day, she was well enough to be discharged from the hospital.
